It might be safe to say that raspberries are my favourite fruit.
Ahh… I’m torn, as I also have an intense love for bananas… and peaches… ooh ooh, and fresh summer cherries. But, if I was stranded on an island, with only one fruit to choose from, it would be raspberries. That’s my final answer.
These delicious little berries are kind of unassuming, all little and sweet looking, but they are filled with punch-you-in-the-face flavour! Seriously, I don’t think anyone can toss a handful of fresh raspberries in their mouth and call it “bland”.
Raspberries are not only incredibly juicy and flavourful, they are also loaded with fibre and antioxidants! In fact, just one cup of raspberries provides 43% of the daily recommended intake of Vitamin C!
Another thing I just love about raspberries is that they are very low in sugar compared to other fruit, so they are good for those with blood sugar issues! Raspberries are also low in calories as one whole cup is only about 60 calories!
I decided to combine my raspberries with apple, flaxseed, cinnamon, a little bit of stevia (totally optional), and unsweetened almond milk to make this delicious smoothie! Then I enjoyed it with a side of eggs, the usual protein in my breakfast!
The apple is subtle but adds a little more flavour to the raspberry saturated smoothie, and the cinnamon gives the smoothie a hint of spice and metabolism boosting power! Flaxseed brings in healthy fats and more fibre to keep the tummy full and satisfied until it’s time for a morning snack!
This smoothie fits perfectly into my cleansing and detoxing focus for this month of January and is a great way to add extra fibre into your day to boost your digestive function!
- 1 cup fresh or frozen raspberries (I love to use frozen)
- ½ apple, cored (gala or granny smith work nicely)
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons ground or whole flaxseed (use ground if you don't have a high speed blender like a Vitamix or Blendtec)
- 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
- 5 drops liquid stevia (optional, to cut the acidity of the fruit)
- Blend everything in a blender until smooth.
- Top with fresh raspberries as a garnish.
…Speaking of digestion, this coming Sunday marks the release of my NITK DIGESTION RESET guide! I’m so excited for the start of the NITK GUIDES SERIES and I hope you find the information as valuable as I do!
