If you are a NITK regular reader you’ll know I love to talk about brands I’m swooning over! I often get asked what my fave products are – so I decided to compile a little listy-poo!
Here are 8 of my MUST HAVE food products – they are all made by fantastic brands that keep their products as natural and good-for-you as possible!
I eat a tablespoon of this goodness every single day. Every. Single. Day! It’s the key ingredient to a great bowl of oatmeal! I always mix the flaxseed into my oats and it makes the oatmeal extra thick and filling! Flaxseed is a fantastic source of fibre and Omega-3 essential fatty acids – it does wonders for the digestive system! I always recommend ground flaxseed to clients who struggle with digestive issues, particularly those who are always bunged up! Flaxseed will most definitely help get things moving (but not in a harsh way!).
Ok, so I’m a bit of a Nut-Butter-Monster. Nut butters are a true love of mine. Creamy, rich, delicious, and one spoonful just makes my day! I have a lot of favorite nut butter brands, but I recently stumbled across Adams, and my heart was officially won over. I find that natural nut butters can sometimes get dry or have a grainy consistency – this peanut butter is smoooooooth. I mean SMOOTH. And, it’s just peanuts, they don’t add any oils, sugars, nothin’! If you haven’t tried Adams brand – you must!
I do a lot more baking now than I did in the past, and if I’m not using Stevia as a sweetener – or honey – it’s this Wholesome Sweeteners Organic Coconut Palm Sugar! This brand really values sustainable organic agriculture, and the sugar is produced on small, sustainable, cooperative owned farms! Coconut palm sugar is a fantastic natural sweetener and a good alternative to white sugar in baking as it scores much lower on the glycemic index and does not cause a spike in blood sugar levels the way refined sugar does! Coconut palm sugar is also a great source of minerals including potassium, magnesium, zinc, iron, and phosphorus!
Ok, so we all know I have a little bit of an obsession with making my own homemade energy/protein bars! Just look at my recipe page under snacks and you’ll see about 12 different recipes! Parnoosh dates are amazing – they are PERFECT for homemade treats as they blend up in a jiffy! So many times in the past I had bought pitted medjool dates and had to spend time soaking them before they would blend – not these ones! Not only are they perfect for homemade energy treats, they are incredibly delicious just to snack on! My fave right now is a piece of celery, some peanut butter, and a couple Parnoosh dates squished into the celery! A different take on “ants on a log”! Dates are rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber, but they are higher in natural sugars so best eaten in moderation… if you can!
I don’t eat a ton of bread, but when I do.. it’s Ezekiel 4:9 Cinnamon Raisin Sprouted Grain bread! First of all, I love the Ezekiel 4:9 brand as a whole because all of their breads are made with only freshly sprouted certified organic live grains. They don’t use any genetically modified organisms (GMO’s), refined sugars, or anything artificial – no preservatives or shortenings! They also use a unique slow-bake process to preserve the natural fibre and bran benefits of grains. In this day and age it’s almost impossible to find a store-bought loaf of bread that doesn’t have an ingredients list that looks like a chemical lab inventory, so I’m happy there’s Ezekiel 4:9. Oh, and the Cinnamon Raisin variety… ummm to. die. for. YUM. Just check out my Cinnamon Raisin Protein French Toast!
Yep, this list wouldn’t be complete without my favourite protein. Every single recipe under the “protein powder recipes” section on my recipe page is made using North Coast Naturals. Ever since the first time I tried this protein I was in love! I’d never before tried a protein powder that tastes so great and is great for you! North Coast Naturals whey isolate is made from 100% CFM Whey Protein Isolate, the pure and gentle protein, and it digests well – as most people who have tried a variety of whey products will tell you not all digest with ease! There are no artificial sweeteners, and it is naturally sweetened with low-glycemic fructose. No yucky chemical taste! No artificial anything, and it comes in vanilla, chocolate, and unflavored – perfect for baking!
It’s kind of ridiculous how much of this the hubby and I go through on a weekly basis. When berries aren’t in season, I go for Europe’s Best 4-Field Berry Mix! I put this in my oatmeal, yogurt, and protein smoothies on an almost daily basis! I also use berries in baking, and just eat them by the handful! The Europe’s Best brand is great as they don’t contain GMO’s, artificial preservatives, colors, or flavours! Berries are a fantastic source of fibre and antioxidants, and for fruits, berries are some of the lowest in natural sugars!
Although I’d love to know how to make my own Red Thai Curry paste (I have no idea where to find galangal, or kaffir lime leaf!?) this curry paste from Thai Kitchen is awesome! It’s dairy and gluten free and has a very short ingredients list – no fillers, additives, sugars, or anything that makes you go “whaa?!” – Red chili pepper, garlic, lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaf, salt, shallot, spices – that’s it, that’s all! Combine this paste with some light coconut milk for mean homemade Thai curry – like this one, or this one! The hubby and I love curries, so this paste is a go-to at home!
And that’s my list – there will definitely be another edition to this because the list could definitely go on… but we will keep it at 8 for today!
