I must admit, I am a snacker, almost more than a meal eater. Partly because I don’t always feel hungry enough for a bigger meal and also because my job doesn’t always allow me to get my 3 square meals/day, and with little time between appointments, good snacks just work better!
I still manage to keep my blood sugar levels and metabolism up (there are days, those days, where it’s just impossible, but I do really try) with good healthy snacks to keep me going!
These are my favorite five “go-to” snacks. I always have one , if not all of these somewhere…maybe the fridge, or cupboards at home, at work, in a ziploc in my purse, or even in my car! Whenever I need a snack or an energy boost I know I have the right choices available, and the little temptations (leftover halloween candy maybe) that might be lying around (everywhere I go, seriously) don’t win!
1) Simple Trail Mix
I love this stuff! It’s a delicious mix of unsalted almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, dried raisins, dried cranberries, and love. Yes, I swear they put love in there somewhere.
Now, I know what your thinking.. “but Christal! Trail mix is bad for you, it’s so high calorie!”.. well, yeah it CAN be. BUT, if you practice something that might not always be so easy, moderation, then trail mix can be a great snack!
Always go for the unsweetened versions with just a simple mix of nuts and dried fruits, and pre portion it into a ziploc bag, to avoid overindulgence. The energy, fiber, and healthy fats, go a long way in this little snack so I only usually take about 1.5oz (around 180 calories), and that does the trick!
2) Apple & Almond Cashew Butter
This is one of my favorite favorites! I love the combination of a crunchy, crisp, fresh, sweet, delicious apple and some smooth salty yet sweet creamy Almond Cashew Butter! A great dose of protein and simple carbohydrates! This is a great post-workout snack too! The almond butter in the pic is the Nuts To You brand, it is all natural, no added sugars or hydrogenated oils! I love, love, love it!
3) Roasted Garlic Hummus & Raw Veggies
I love my veggies, and I can say that without cracking a smile! I really do! If I don’t get enough veggies in my day I feel like I’m missing something! Kind of the same feeling I get when I haven’t had enough water in a day. I just need the stuff!
My favorite way to eat raw veggies is with some yummy roasted garlic hummus! I love the Tribe brand the best! They do not add any artifical ingredients and have almost a whipped consistency, light and delicious! Hummus is a great source of fiber, essential fatty acids, and iron, and the roasted garlic is a great immune booster!
4) Mary’s Gone Crackers! & Green Grapes
Next is my favorite cracker snack! I don’t often eat crackers in general because they are usually processed, high in sodium, and made with hydrogenated oils – These however, aren’t! Mary’s Gone Crackers! is a great brand because they use whole, natural foods to make their products! These crackers are made with brown rice, quinoa, flax seeds, sesame seeds, water, sea salt, and tamari! That’s it, that’s all! My kind of cracker!
I love to pair the crackers with grapes – I’m also a HUGE grape fan! I just love the crunch from the cracker, followed by a crisp and juicy grape! Mmmm…. where are those grapes right now… I want some!
5) Planet Organic Cosmic Cookies
Ok so these planet orgasmic cookies…woops! I mean planet organic cosmic cookies, are seriously amazing!
For those who aren’t around these parts, Planet Organic is an organic grocery store. They have an awesome deli and bakery and this is where you will find these amazing cookies!! I have to admit, these are only a once in a while snack, because all though they are made with wholesome goodness, they are crazy addicting and I could eat a whole bag.
